US Imposes Sanctions on Georgian Officials
The US government has taken action against two high-ranking officials in Georgia. The US Department of the Treasury announced sanctions on Vakhtang Gomelauri and Mirza Kezevadze.
Gomelauri is the Minister of Internal Affairs, while Kezevadze is a Deputy Director at the Special Tasks Department. They have been added to a list called the “Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List”. This list was created by law in 2017 and targets people who have abused human rights.
The US Treasury says that Gomelauri and his team used violence against journalists and their own citizens during recent elections in Georgia. They also claim that these officials deliberately targeted journalists, which is not allowed under the law.
The sanctions were coordinated with the UK government, which has also taken action against the two officials. The US is committed to holding people accountable for suppressing human rights and freedoms, both at home and globally.
