**What Does the MEGOBARI Act Do?**
The bill aims to:
* Review the US-Georgia relationship and all assistance programs
* Recognize the Georgian people’s support for their country’s commitment to European integration
* Impose sanctions on officials from the ruling party who have engaged in corrupt activities that harm Georgia’s stability and sovereignty
* Support people-to-people ties and defense cooperation between the two countries when Georgia meets its constitutional requirements
* Express support for Georgia’s full sovereignty and territorial integrity amid continued Russian occupation
* Back civil society groups that defend the Georgian people and constitution against government abuses
**Next Steps**
The bill will now move to the full US Senate for debate, amendments, and a vote. A simple majority is needed to pass it. If approved by the Senate, the bill will be sent to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
**Background**
The MEGOBARI Act was originally introduced in the US House of Representatives in May 2024 but was delayed during the previous congressional session. It has since been reintroduced and is now headed to additional committees for further consideration.
