**Oklahoma Program Aims to Reduce Maternal Deaths**
A program in Oklahoma is working to lower the number of women who die during or after childbirth. The “Healthy Start” program was started in 2019 by a doctor who saw many young mothers dying from pregnancy-related complications.
The program provides care and support to pregnant women, especially those who are considered high-risk. This includes regular check-ups with doctors and nurses, as well as classes on healthy eating and exercise.
**More Help for Expectant Mothers**
Dr. Jacob Lenz is a doctor at the Oklahoma State University obstetrics and gynecology clinic in Tulsa. He performs ultrasounds to monitor the health of the unborn baby. “We want to make sure these women get the care they need,” Dr. Lenz said.
Areana Coles, a pregnant woman, attended one of the Healthy Start program’s prenatal visits at the same clinic. She listened carefully as Krystal Keener, a care coordinator, talked about the importance of healthy eating and staying active during pregnancy.
**Reducing Maternal Deaths**
The “Healthy Start” program is part of a larger effort to reduce maternal deaths in Oklahoma. The state has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the country. Similar programs are also being implemented in other states, such as California and New York City.
