Serbian Student Protests to Last Longer, Theater Director Says
Student protests in Serbia have been going on for over a month. A protest is planned for New Year’s Eve. According to theater director Milica Kralj, the protests will last longer than expected.
Kralj compared the current events to student protests in 1996. She said that the authorities expect the protests to stop and students to go on holiday, but she believes this will not happen. Instead, the students are determined to make changes.
“I am honored to stand with them,” Kralj said. “Physical violence will not intimidate us.” She emphasized the need for solidarity and persistence in the fight for justice.
Kralj feels that the younger generation should not have to bear the weight of the unresolved issues left by previous generations. She believes that it is unfair for them to carry this burden. Instead, she wants to support them and help them find a way forward.
“We must stand together,” Kralj said. “In 15 minutes of silence during protests, I feel like the entire world is with us.” She emphasized the need to hold people accountable and to fight against corruption.
Entering 2025, Kralj feels more optimistic than she did the previous year. She believes that there is a way forward and that the students will succeed in creating a more just society.
