**Ukrainian Refugees Face Uncertainty in the UK**
Professor Natalia Kogut has spoken out about the difficulties faced by Ukrainian refugees in the UK. She was one of over 300,000 people given sanctuary in the country after Russia‘s invasion three years ago.
Ms Kogut, a research fellow at the University of Birmingham, said many Ukrainians are struggling because their temporary visas are running out. This means they may lose their jobs and tenancy agreements. The Home Office has suggested that those with permission can apply to stay in the UK for an additional 18 months.
However, Ms Kogut is concerned about her own future. Her visa expires in March, making it hard for her to extend her tenancy agreement. “It’s just impossible,” she said. “We have no stability and can’t plan for the future.”
**Charities Call for Change**
Charities are also speaking out against the temporary visas offered to Ukrainian refugees. The Ukraine Appeal charity has called on the government to rethink its policies, saying some employers are reluctant to hire Ukrainians because of their temporary status.
Ms Kogut said she had rebuilt her life in Birmingham but was now facing uncertainty about her future. “Three years feels like 10 years at least,” she said. “It’s horrible. We still don’t know what is going to happen with Ukraine.”
**Home Office Response**
The Home Office has responded by saying the conflict in Ukraine is unpredictable and that it will keep its Ukraine schemes under review. However, it does not offer any permanent solution for refugees.
