Visit of Council of Europe Secretary General to Georgia
The visit of Alen Berset, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, is important for several reasons. According to Tina Bokuchava, leader of “Unity – National Movement”, it shows support for the Georgian people and assesses their human rights situation.
The main focus of this visit is not on the government or elections, but rather on the poor state of human rights in Georgia. Many people have been unlawfully detained and beaten by the current regime, led by Ivanishvili. The Secretary General’s delegation will look into these issues and issue a report on their findings.
Tina Bokuchava said that the visit is also an opportunity to demand the release of those who are being held unfairly. Many of them have been tortured and mistreated by the government. She hopes that Alen Berset will explain the purpose of this visit clearly, which is to support the Georgian people, assess their human rights situation, and issue a report on the treatment of detained individuals.
This visit comes at a time when many local NGOs have described the treatment of detainees as equivalent to torture. Tina Bokuchava believes that the Secretary General’s delegation will take note of these issues and provide a public explanation regarding the purpose of their visit.
