Today, Georgia will be discussed at the European Parliament
Today, the European Parliament plenary is discussing the issue of Georgia. Josep Borrell, Vice President of the European Commission and High Representative of European Union, will make a statement on Georgia.
The topic is: “Democratic Regression and the Threat of Political Pluralism in Georgia”.
According to information posted on the European Parliament website, MEPs will discuss with Josep Borell the deterioration in democracy in Georgia, before the vote scheduled for Thursday on the resolution.
“As Georgia prepares to hold parliamentary elections on the 26th of October, concerns have been raised over the increasingly authoritarian policy of the ruling Georgian Dream Party, especially in regards to media freedom and LGBTQ+ issues. Georgia was granted EU Candidate status in December 2023. However, the party has been criticized for crackingdown on pro-democracy demonstrations and introducing legislation that labels Western funded media and NGOs “foreign agents.”
