A protest rally will take place in Tbilisi on March 31. The event, called “The Spring of the People is Coming,” will be held on Rustaveli Avenue.
Citizens are invited to gather on Rustaveli Avenue at 20:00. At 21:00, Salome Zurabishvili, Georgia‘s fifth President, will address the public. She will discuss an action plan agreed upon with opposition leaders.
The organizers say March 31 is a special day for Georgians. It marks the anniversary of the country’s independence referendum in 1991, when 99.08% of citizens voted for freedom from Russian rule.
In addition to the rally on Rustaveli Avenue, several protest marches are planned throughout Tbilisi. Students will gather near the Tbilisi State University at 19:00 with a slogan “Our future is an independent state.” They will march towards the parliament building.
At the same time, a march dedicated to the referendum will start from Republic Square and head in the direction of the parliament. Representatives of the cultural sphere will also join the protests at the Rustaveli Theater under the slogan “Culture for independence.”
The organizers say they are protesting against tyranny and demanding independence for their country.
