Georgia’s Electoral College to Elect President on December 14
The electoral college of Georgia will choose the country‘s president on December 14. Only one person, Mikheil Kavelashvili, has been nominated for the job.
The voting process starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 2:00 p.m. in the Parliament Palace. To elect a new president, the majority of the electoral college’s full composition (151 members) must be present.
To win the election, the candidate needs to get votes from at least two-thirds of the full composition (200 members). The indirectly elected president will serve for five years.
The electoral college has 300 members. It includes:
* All 150 members of the parliament
* 21 deputies from the Autonomous Republic of Adjara
* 20 members from the highest representative body of Abkhazia
* 109 members from city councils
The “Georgian Dream” party dominates the electoral college with 211 members, while the opposition has 69 members. However, it’s unlikely that the opposition will participate in choosing the new president.
On December 14, the CEC will summarize the results of the presidential elections at a session held in the Parliament Palace immediately after the voting.
