Today, the European Parliament plenary is discussing the issue of Georgia. Josep Borrell, Vice President of the European Commission and High Representative of European Union will make a statement on Georgia.
The topic is: “Democratic Regression and the Threat of Political Pluralism in Georgia”.
According to information posted on the European Parliament’s website, MEPs and Josep Borrell are scheduled to discuss the deterioration in democracy in Georgia prior the vote on a resolution on this topic scheduled for Thursday. As the country prepares to hold parliamentary elections on the 26th of October, concerns have been raised over the increasingly authoritarian policy of the ruling Georgian Dream Party, especially in regards to media freedom and LGBTQ+ issues. Georgia was granted EU Candidate status in December 2023. However, the ruling party has been criticized for crackingdown on pro-democracy demonstrations and introducing legislation that labels Western-funded NGOs and media as “foreigners”. The information from the European Parliament warns that if “Georgian Dream”, which is the main candidate in the upcoming election, wins a majority, the multi-party system in Georgia and its political pluralism will be even more threatened.
