A councillor said that more host families were needed in Torbay to accommodate Ukrainian refugees.
Since the Russian invasion of February 2022, the Bay welcomed more than 220 Ukrainians who stayed with 120 families.
Councillor Chris Lewis stated that they need another 30 hosts “with one or two spare rooms, preferably”.
Katya Piavka (27), who left Poltava, Ukraine, two-and-a half years ago, loves her job and her life in Devon but misses her family.
‘Had help’
She said, “A lot people I knew began to be killed [in Ukraine].” “It was terrible – a horrific experience.”
She was staying with Jodie West in Paignton.
“I couldn’t imagine what was happening over there.” Ms West said, “I just had to help somehow.”
“I had space, I didn’t need a roommate, and I had no plans to ever use that space. Then it seemed the most obvious thing.”
Ms Piavka shares a kitchen and lounge area with Ms West, but has her own bedroom.
‘I miss my family’
Mr Lewis, cabinet minister for Place Development and Economic Growth and Torbay Council deputy leader, said, “We want to do our part to increase the host family numbers for those fleeing Ukraine.”
“We need 30 more [host families ]…
“We are looking for people who have one or two spare rooms. You will receive PS350 per month for this.”
“But it’s about the money, and I’m certain the people of Torbay would stand up like they did a year ago and welcome people from the Ukraine here.”
Ms Piavka said, “My job is brilliant, and I love it.” I love my life here but I miss my family.
