US President Donald Trump has said it’s harder to deal with Ukraine than Russia. He made the comment during a press briefing on March 7.
Trump also said that Russia is bombing Ukraine badly. He added that he might impose big sanctions and tariffs on Russia until there’s a peace agreement.
When asked why the US wasn’t giving more air defense to Ukraine, Trump replied that he needs to know if the Ukrainians want to settle with Russia. If they don’t, the US will leave.
Trump also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is doing what anyone would do in his place – trying to end the war quickly. However, the US president wants Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine to end before making any security guarantees to Ukraine.
The situation has been complicated since Trump ejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky from the White House and claimed that Ukraine wasn’t ready for peace. The US halted military aid to Ukraine after this incident.
Ukrainian and US delegations are planning to meet in Saudi Arabia on March 11 to discuss a potential peace agreement. Meanwhile, Zelensky has proposed a truce banning missiles and drones targeting civilian infrastructure as the first step towards de-escalation.
Russia has continued to launch aerial attacks against Ukraine in recent days. Trump’s threat to impose sanctions on Moscow comes amid these attacks.
