Donald Trump to Meet Vladimir Putin
US President-elect Donald Trump said a meeting is being arranged between himself and Russian President Vladimir Putin. No date was given for when the meeting would take place.
Trump spoke at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. He said that Putin wants to meet and that he is setting it up. The Kremlin has agreed to talks, but no details have been confirmed yet.
Donald Trump has promised to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine after taking office on January 20th. He has expressed skepticism about US support for Ukraine’s government. “President Putin wants to meet,” Trump said on Thursday. “He has said that publicly and we have to get that war over with.”
A spokesman for Ukraine’s foreign ministry said that high-level talks are expected between the Trump administration and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after January 20th. Donald Trump has nominated Keith Kellogg, a former national security adviser, as special envoy to Ukraine and Russia.
Kellogg suggested in a research paper that Ukraine should only get US aid if it agreed to participate in peace talks with Moscow. If Moscow refused to talk, the US should continue to support Ukraine.
Volodymyr Zelensky said after Donald Trump’s election win that he believed the war would end sooner because of Trump. He had a “constructive exchange” by phone with Trump, but no demands were mentioned regarding possible talks with Russia.
