**US President Trump Pushes China to Help End Russia‘s War in Ukraine**
On January 21, US President Donald Trump said he asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to help put an end to Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. Speaking at the White House, Trump claimed he brought up the matter with Xi during a phone call.
**Trump Blames Xi for Not Doing Enough**
According to Trump, Xi has not done enough to help resolve the conflict. “He’s got a lot of power,” Trump said. “I said, ‘You ought to get it settled.’ We did discuss it.” However, Trump did not mention Ukraine in his comments directly after speaking with Xi on January 17.
**China and Russia Deepen Ties**
Just a day before Trump’s comments, Chinese President Xi held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In the call, Xi praised the deepening ties between Moscow and Beijing. This move has raised concerns that China is supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
**US Threatens Sanctions on Russia**
Trump has previously spoken admiringly of both Xi and Putin. However, he now says the US will “likely” impose new sanctions on Russia if Putin refuses to make a deal to end the war. The previous day, Trump said Putin was “destroying Russia” by not making a deal.
**A Changing Timeline**
Trump campaigned on the promise that he could end Russia’s war in Ukraine within 24 hours of his election. However, since his November victory, the timeline for a peace agreement has changed significantly. Trump now acknowledges that resolving the situation is “a tough one.”
**US and Ukraine Urge China to Act**
Both the US and Ukraine have previously urged China to exert pressure on Russia to de-escalate the war. They have asked China to withdraw North Korean troops and stop military aid to Russia.
