Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo suggested a $500 billion loan-lease to Ukraine, with NATO and EU support. However, he excluded the return of occupied territory.
Donald Trump, the US President-elect, announced that he would not invite Mike Pompeo, his former Secretary of state, who advocated for increased Ukraine assistance, to join his Administration.
Nikki Haley is also not included in the list of candidates. She was Trump’s former UN ambassador and a Republican presidential candidate for 2024.
Trump has made ending Russia’s conflict in Ukraine a priority but has not revealed his strategy. His strategy may be revealed by upcoming appointments and advisor recommendations.
Trump wrote on Twitter that he would not invite former Ambassador Haley or former Secretary Pompeo to the administration, despite his appreciation for our previous collaboration.
The Wall Street Journal published Pompeo’s Ukraine peace plan for summer 2024. His proposal included $500 Billion in Lend-Lease Assistance, Ukraine’s NATO membership and EU membership and the use of frozen Russian assets for rebuilding. The plan called for the demilitarization of Crimea, but did not address returning occupied territories.
Trump continues to evaluate administration candidates in advance of the 20th January 2025 inauguration.
