In a recent interview with The Washington Post, former US President Donald Trump spoke highly of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stating that he had a good relationship with him and liked him. This comes after Trump had previously criticized Zelenskyy during a campaign event, but later praised him after their meeting, saying that they both want to see an end to the war and a fair deal made.
During the interview, Trump also commended Zelenskyy for his handling of Trump’s first impeachment proceedings, stating that he could have easily denied knowing about the taped conversation, but instead chose to stand by Trump and say that he did nothing wrong. Trump’s first impeachment occurred in December 2019, with the Senate ultimately acquitting him in February 2020.
Trump also discussed his belief that President Biden’s early approach to energy contributed to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, claiming that it drove up the price of oil and gave Putin an incentive to start a war. When asked about his previous statement that he would provide Ukraine with more aid than ever before if Putin rejected his peace deal, Trump reaffirmed his stance, stating that it makes sense but was not widely reported on.
