**US to Impose Sanctions on Russia if No Peace Deal**
On January 21, US President Donald Trump said that the US will likely impose additional sanctions on Russia if Russian President Vladimir Putin fails to negotiate a peace deal with Ukraine.
Trump made the statement in response to a question from a reporter. He said “Sounds likely” when asked about imposing more sanctions on Russia if Putin does not come to the negotiating table.
The US is developing a comprehensive sanctions strategy aimed at facilitating a diplomatic resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war, according to reports by Bloomberg. The Trump team is weighing two primary approaches: one that focuses on good-faith measures to benefit Russian oil producers, and another that involves expanding sanctions to exert maximum pressure on Moscow.
Trump has repeatedly vowed to quickly negotiate the end of the war. A detailed plan has not yet been proposed, but it’s likely to require the presence of European peacekeepers.
The US has already imposed extensive sanctions on Russia’s oil sector, targeting nearly 200 vessels in the “shadow fleet” and key oil companies. These measures have impacted the global oil market, pushing Brent crude prices up by nearly $5 per barrel.
The G7 nations are also considering tightening the existing $60 per barrel price cap on Russian oil, according to reports by Bloomberg.
