US Delegation Heads to Russia for Ceasefire Talks
The US is sending representatives to Russia to discuss a proposed 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. This was announced by US President Donald Trump on March 12, during a meeting with the Irish Prime Minister.
Trump said that Washington has “some positive messages” about a possible ceasefire and that the decision now lies with Russia. The proposal for a temporary truce was made by the US during talks in Saudi Arabia on March 11.
The Ukrainian government agreed to the ceasefire provided that Russia also agrees. As part of this agreement, the US will restart its military and intelligence support for Ukraine.
Russia’s reaction to the proposal has been cautious. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the topic must first be discussed with the American side.
Trump warned Russia that it could face “devastating” financial consequences if it continues to wage war against Ukraine. He hinted at using tariffs and sanctions, but also emphasized his desire for peace.
Reuters reported that Russia is unlikely to agree to a ceasefire, believing it has the upper hand on the battlefield and sees the ceasefire as a trap. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kyiv doesn’t trust Russia, but wants to show the international community its commitment to ending the war.
Ongoing battles are being reported in the suburbs of Sudzha in Kursk Oblast and the surrounding areas. The Ukrainian military’s Southern Command has confirmed that Russian forces have entered the eastern part of Sudzha and are entrenching their positions.
