US House Speaker Mike Johnson has demanded that Ukraine’s ambassador, Oksana Markarova, be fired by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Johnson alleges that Markarova organized a partisan event during Zelenskyy’s recent visit to a munitions factory in Scranton, Pennsylvania, which was designed to benefit Democrats in the upcoming US election on November 5th.
The House Oversight Chair, Republican James Comer, has launched an investigation into the visit, claiming that it excluded GOP members and served as a campaign event for Vice President Kamala Harris. Zelenskyy’s appearance alongside Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a key ally of Harris, has drawn criticism from Republicans who see it as a sign of political favoritism.
Senator Ted Cruz has also joined in the criticism, calling Zelenskyy a “moron” and accusing him of interfering in US domestic politics. However, Zelenskyy’s visit to Pennsylvania is similar to his previous appearances in other states, where he has met with both Republican and Democratic leaders to express support for Ukraine in its battle against Russia.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his running mate Senator JD Vance have also criticized Zelenskyy, with Vance being described by Zelenskyy as “too radical” in a recent interview. Trump has accused Zelenskyy of campaigning for Kamala Harris and unfairly favoring Democrats in the upcoming election. He has also accused Zelenskyy of undermining his campaign and aligning with Democrats to maintain US financial support for Ukraine.
Trump’s claims have been met with backlash, with many pointing out that Zelenskyy’s visit to Pennsylvania was similar to his previous visits to other states where he has met with both Republican and Democratic leaders. Zelenskyy has also denied any involvement in US domestic politics and has stated that his focus is on maintaining US support in Ukraine’s battle against Russia.
