Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. president, is projected to win the crucial state of North Carolina. This state counts for 16 votes in Electoral College.
Trump was 50.8% ahead of Democratic Vice President Kamala Harria after 90% of the votes were counted.
The projection marks the very first call on a major swing-state in the presidential election of November 5.
In U.S. Presidential elections, a candidate doesn’t have to win the majority of popular votes, but rather a majority in electoral votes, which is allocated per state according to population. A candidate must win an election by securing 270 electoral votes.
North Carolina is among a few pivotal states that will determine the next U.S. President. Other key battlegrounds are Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania. Wisconsin, Michigan and Arizona.
Donald Trump won North Carolina in both the 2016 and the 2020 elections.
The election results will have a profound effect on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Harris has pledged that she will continue to support Ukraine in its fight for freedom, but many are afraid that Trump may cut a deal, possibly at the expense of painful concessions from Ukraine.
