Belarus Opposition Leader Discusses Ukraine Ties
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the main opposition leader in Belarus, recently talked about her efforts to keep good relations with Ukrainian leaders. She gave an interview to European Pravda on December 10.
Tsikhanouskaya said that she and her group have been meeting with important people from Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry and the advisors of President Volodymyr Zelensky. While things haven’t gone as well as she had hoped, she thinks they’re doing okay.
She emphasized that she doesn’t want to do anything that might hurt Ukraine. If it takes time for Ukrainian leaders and Belarus’ Democratic Forces to become close friends, that’s fine with her. She said there’s no need to push too hard for more official ties.
Tsikhanouskaya also stressed the importance of showing how unreliable Belarus’ leader, Alexander Lukashenko, is. She wants people to know that he can’t be trusted and will always lie.
The opposition leader believes that Ukraine must win its war first. A free Belarus depends on Ukraine being free from Russian aggression. She said Ukraine should get all the help it needs to defeat Russia and then focus on helping Belarus.
Tsikhanouskaya herself was kicked out of her country after receiving popular support in the 2020 elections. Many of her supporters were arrested. Her husband, Siarhei, has been behind bars since before the elections when he tried to challenge Lukashenko’s rule.
