On November 5, 2024, the State Security Service of Georgia announced that two Georgians, Khajarat Akhavlediani & Giorgi Romalashvili had been released & are now safe in the territory controlled by central government.
Khajarat Akhvlediani, a Georgian national, was allegedly detained illegally by the Russian occupiers in the occupied territory, near the village of Takhtisdziri (Kareli municipality), on February 28, 2024. Giorgi Romalashvili, meanwhile, was allegedly detained illegally by the Russian occupiers on May 25, 2024, near the occupied Tskhinvali area.
The SSSG stated that the “hotline” operated by the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) and all relevant tools available to the central government in the process of releasing Khajarat and Giorgi Romalashvili from their illegal imprisonment were both actively used. The issue was also discussed at both the meetings held under the format of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) as well as the Geneva International Discussions.
The SSSG stated that all responsibility for destructive acts carried out in the occupied areas of Georgia and along occupation line lies with the occupying force.
The statement added that “the central Government, together with international Partners, continues to actively work for the release all citizens of Georgia who are illegally detained on the occupied territory.”
