Two Georgian Ambassadors Quit Over Government‘s Decision to Leave EU Path.
The Georgian government has made a surprising decision. They will not join the European Union until 2028. The government, led by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, made this choice.
As a result of this decision, two high-ranking diplomats have quit their jobs. One is David Solomonia, Georgia’s Ambassador to the Netherlands. He said he was disappointed that his work did not match what he wanted for his country. The other is Otar Berdzenishvili, Georgia’s Ambassador to Bulgaria.
Both ambassadors expressed their disappointment on social media. They said they had worked hard to get Georgia closer to Europe. But now, it seems like that goal has been put off.
The government’s decision was made without consulting many people in the country. As a result, protests broke out across Georgia. Many protesters disagree with the government’s choice and are demanding a different path for their country.
Unfortunately, police have cracked down on these protesters. At least 107 people were arrested in the capital city of Tbilisi. Ten more were detained in the city of Batumi.
