Two professors at Tbilisi State University have been fired. They were supporters of the pro-EU protests.
One of the professors, Giorgi Tsertsvadze, posted on Facebook that he had been dismissed. He wrote in a sarcastic tone about pouring water on the mill of the “deep state” and “global war party”. This is a conspiracy theory often used by the government to blame external forces for problems.
The firing has sparked criticism from opposition figures. They say it’s an attack on dissenting voices. Irakli Kupradze, a leader of the Strong Georgia coalition, called it “severe” and “criminal”.
This comes after another university revoked student status from some protesters and fined them GEL 5,000 (about $1,800). The government also fired staff members at the Ministry of Defense.
In total, over 400 civil servants have been dismissed since changes to the Civil Service Law. This has led to calls for lawsuits against the government for political persecution.
