U.S. to Take Further Action Against Georgia
The U.S. State Department will continue to take action against Georgia, according to Spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Miller said that a review of U.S.-Georgian cooperation is still ongoing, but has already led to several actions being taken. These include suspending assistance and imposing visa restrictions on dozens of Georgian officials.
In May, the U.S. launched a comprehensive review after Georgia passed a law aimed at stifling civil society and dissent. Since then, the Treasury Department has sanctioned four Georgian individuals, and the U.S. has cut over $95 million in aid to the Georgian government.
The Noble Partner exercise was also postponed indefinitely.
Reports suggest that the U.S. has already drafted sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili, Georgia’s billionaire de facto ruler.
Two bills, the Georgian People’s Act and the MEGOBARI Act, propose sanctions against Georgian officials responsible for undermining democracy in the country.
