The United Kingdom has sanctioned 20 vessels that are part of Russia’ “shadow fleet”. These ships transport Russian products around the world, violating international sanctions. The UK has also pledged £35 million in to help Ukraine repair its energy grid.

Russia’s shadow fleet is made up of semi-legal cargo ships that carry Russian oil and other goods. An estimated 70% of Russia’s seaborne oil exports are transported by these old and poorly insured tankers. This poses significant threat to the environment and helps fund Russia’s efforts.

The UK has already sanctioned over 100 ships for transporting Russian energy, including 93 oil tankers. The newly sanctioned vessels include the Ocean Faye, Andaman Skies, and Mianzimu, which are expected to carry more than 4 million barrels of Russian oil by the end of 2024.
