Barbara Woodward, a British diplomat, announced the UN Security Council meeting on 18 November. She also highlighted that many conflicts around the world are linked to Russia.
The United Kingdom will convene an extra UN Security Council Meeting on 18 November, to mark 1,000 days since Russia began its full-scale invasion in Ukraine. According to Ukrinform, the meeting will focus on three major conflicts around the world: the Middle East conflict, the Ukraine conflict, and the Sudan conflict.
The UN General Assembly condemned Russia’s actions against Ukraine and passed a resolution calling for a complete withdrawal. However, Russia remains a permanent member with veto powers and the UN chief recently visited Russia to shake hands with Putin. Russia has tried to portray its aggression as a protective measure for the Russian-speaking population in Ukraine. This narrative has been met by skepticism from Western nations and outright rejection.
Ukrinform reports that Barbara Woodward, the Permanent Representative of Britain to the UN, announced the next UN Security Council Meeting.
According to the diplomats, Moscow is purchasing drones and ammunition from Iran, while making arrangements with North Korea for troop deployment, increasing military cooperation with both countries.
The British representative stressed the involvement of Moscow in global conflicts. She stated that “wherever chaos and death reign, President Putin is never far away.” She also indicated that Britain intended to use its Security Council Presidency to address Russian disinformation.
Despite Russia’s attempts to block the monthly schedule of the Council over the inclusion Ukraine-related discussions. Member states can still request meeting outside the official agenda.
The Security Council rotates its presidency every month amongst its 15 members. From September to December, the positions are held by Slovenia, Switzerland, UK and the United States.
In October, Ukrainian NGOs urged that the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is the court of justice for the International Criminal Court, address the meeting between UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the BRICS Summit in October 2024. They expressed concern Guterres’ engagement Putin could undermine the ICC’s efforts in holding Russia accountable for war crime in Ukraine.
This visit can also be interpreted as a legitimization of Russia’s actions and undermines the narrative about Russia’s diplomatic exclusion.
In July, Ukraine’s UN Representative Sergiy Kyslytsya alleged that Russia was killing children in Ukraine as well as trying to abduct and brainwash any survivors after the recent deadly attack at the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital of Kyiv.
Despite their warm public rhetoric, top Republicans have made it clear that illegal immigration is their top priority. This is despite the fact that an urgent aid package has been blocked in Congress.
