In October, the Russian military suffered more than 46,000 casualties while gaining only a small amount of territory in eastern Ukraine.
According to UK Chief Of Defence Staff Sir Tony Radakin, in October 2024 Russia suffered its highest casualties during the war. Around 1,500 troops were killed or injured daily. This is the second consecutive month with record-high losses. October was the costliest month in the war for Russia. Over 46,000 casualties were reported.
“Russia is nearing 700,000 dead or wounded – a huge toll of pain, suffering, and pain borne by the Russians due to Putin’s ambitious,” Radakin said to BBC, highlighting that these sacrifices yielded “tiny fractions of land.”
Radakin acknowledged the recent tactical gains of Russia “putting pressure on Ukraine”, but highlighted the economic strains on Russia as it now dedicates over 40% of its spending to defense and safety.
He reaffirmed the West‘s unwavering support for Ukraine, saying, “That is the message that President Putin must absorb and the reassurance to President Zelenskyy.”
