In an interview published on Nov. 8, the U.K. defense minister stated that Russian forces in Ukraine had their deadliest month ever since the full-scale invasion began.
John Healey, speaking to The Telegraph, said that according to British intelligence figures, the number of deaths and injuries amongst the troops of Moscow in October was 41,980.
This is equivalent to 1,354 per day.
British defense intelligence estimates that Russia has suffered more than 696,000 casualties since the full-scale invasion began. This figure is in line with the current total of 707 540 reported by Ukraine on Nov. 9.
The daily figure reported from Kyiv is 1,660, which is the second highest in the war.
The previous second-highest was reported on October 25, surpassing the previous record of 1530, set only a week before.
The bloodiest day in the history of Moscow’s forces occurred on May 13 when they suffered 1,740 reported casualties.
While Russian forces suffer record losses, they are also making rapid gains in the east Ukraine.
According to a Bloomberg report published on November 1, Ukraine has lost 1146 square kilometers since the start of the Kursk Oblast invasion in early August. The week ending Nov. 1 was reported as the worst for lost territory in 2024.
On Nov. 2, Commander in Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that Ukraine was facing ‘one of the most powerful’ Russian offensives since it began the war.
During the autumn, Ukrainian territory, including entire cities, has been lost almost daily in southern Donetsk Oblast. Meanwhile, Russian forces have made significant operational gains near Toretsk and Chasiv Yar as well as Kupiansk as well as their own soil in Kursk Oblast.
Healey told The Telegraph that despite the grim situation Russia’s momentum was not unstoppable.
When asked if Ukraine can win the war with the help of its Western allies, he responded: “The West must and can.”
