**US and Ukraine Agree to Ceasefire Proposal**
The US has proposed a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, which Ukraine is ready to accept. The proposal was made during talks between the two countries in Saudi Arabia.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he would present the offer to Russia and that it’s now up to them to agree. Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky said it’s now up to the US to convince Russia to agree to the proposal.
The talks were the first official meeting between the two countries since a clash between Zelensky and former US President Donald Trump in 2022. A joint statement from the US and Ukraine said they would immediately restart intelligence sharing and security assistance to Ukraine.
Rubio hoped that Russia would accept the proposal, saying “we’ll take this offer now to the Russians and we hope they’ll say yes to peace.” He added that if Russia rejected the offer, it would be clear what’s holding up a peace agreement.
**Background**
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Moscow currently controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory. The US has been pushing for a ceasefire and an end to the war.
**Next Steps**
The US delegation in Jeddah included national security advisor Mike Waltz and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, who is due to travel to Russia in the coming days. Rubio said the critical minerals deal between the US and Ukraine was not discussed during the talks.
**War Continues**
Despite the proposal, the war continued on Tuesday with drone attacks killing at least three people in Moscow and injuring 18 others. Ukrainian officials reported Russian drone attacks on the capital Kyiv and several other regions.
