Ukrainian forces in Donetsk Oblast captured an Egyptian IT student, who, after receiving the Russian passport, Russia conscripted him and sent him to the front.
According to Orest Drymalovskyi, the press officer of the 79th Air Assault Brigade, Ukrainian forces captured a student from Egypt who was mobilized into Russia’s army shortly after obtaining Russian citizenship. The student, who moved to Russia to study IT and was conscripted, was stationed near Kurakhove after his conscription.
According to British defense analyst Michael Clarke, the Russian forces are in desperate shortage of personnel. They suffer about 1,000 casualties a day, or 30,000 deaths and wounded every month. In their rush, they may resort extreme measures to replenish the ranks.
Drymalovskyi claimed that the Egyptian national was only survivor from a failed Russian attack.
“He was lucky. He is the only survivor from the assault group. He was captured. He is an interesting man – he is a polyglot who speaks four languages. “Perhaps we can trade him for those Ukrainians who are in Russian captivity,” said he.
Russia has been increasing the number of foreign nationals in its military ranks. This is often done under coercion. Indian citizens were lured to Russia by false promises of employment and then forced into combat roles in Ukraine. This exploitation resulted in the death of eight Indian citizens and 63 others seeking early discharge from Russian service.
RBC-Ukraine reported that the recruitment of foreigners into the Russian Army, especially those who have financial difficulties, has increased since January 20, 2024. Russian forces are increasingly using recruitment tactics to trick foreign nationals to serve in the Russian Army. Often, they use these tactics to recruit foreigners to frontline units in order to recover massive casualties sustained during their grinding offensive action.
