**Ukraine Demands Apology from FIFA Over Map of Crimea**
Ukraine has criticized the world soccer organization, FIFA, for an “unacceptable error.” A map shown during a 2026 World Cup draw appeared to exclude Crimea, which is recognized as part of Ukraine’s territory.
The map was used to show countries that cannot be drawn against each other due to geopolitical reasons. However, it highlighted Ukraine but left out Crimea, which has been under Russian occupation since 2014.
**Ukraine Reacts**
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi demanded a public apology from FIFA. He called the mistake a violation of international law and accused FIFA of supporting Russian propaganda, war crimes, and aggression against Ukraine.
Tykhyi also posted a corrected version of the map on social media, with Crimea included as part of Ukraine’s territory.
**FIFA Response**
FIFA acknowledged the issue but did not apologize. The organization said it was “aware of an issue” and had since removed the map.
However, the Ukrainian Football Association took further action by sending a formal letter to FIFA’s Secretary-General Mathias Grafström and UEFA‘s Secretary-General Theodore Theodoridis.
**Ukraine’s Letter**
In the letter, the association expressed deep concern over the incident. It referenced decisions made by FIFA and UEFA since 2014 that reaffirmed Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
The association stated that the cartographic image of Ukraine displayed during the draw was “completely unacceptable” and seemed to be an inconsistent position from FIFA and UEFA.
**Controversy Surrounds 2026 World Cup**
The controversy comes as preparations continue for the 2026 World Cup, which will feature an expanded format with 48 teams. The tournament is set to begin on June 11 in Mexico City and conclude on July 19 in New Jersey.
Ukraine was drawn into Group D, where they will face Iceland, Azerbaijan, and the winner of France’s Nations League quarter-final against Croatia.
