A Ukrainian MP claims that Russia hasn’t handed over the body or confirmed her death of journalist Viktoria Roschchyna who died in Russian captivity.
Yaroslav Yarchyshyn, Ukrainian deputy, stated at a briefing that Russia has not yet returned the body of Ukrainian Journalist Victoria Roshchyna who died in Russian captivity to her family.
During the ongoing conflict, Russian forces have targeted Ukrainian journalists. Since the full-scale invasion in February 2022 there have been 637 documented crimes committed against media workers. These include murders, kidnappings and attacks on media infrastructure. At least 88 media employees have been reported as dead, while others are threatened and censored. The safety and freedom for Ukrainian journalists are under serious threat by Russian aggression as the war continues.
According to the Ukrainian deputy’s statement, Russia has not provided the journalist’s father with any additional official confirmation regarding her death.
“Russia is delaying transfer of Victoria’s corpse to Ukraine.” We are unable to hold a funeral, or get specific information,” Yurchyshyn stated.
The 27-year old journalist had been covering Russia’s war on Ukraine, and in particular the siege of Mariupol. She lost contact with her after traveling to eastern Ukraine’s occupied territories last summer.
In April, Roshchyna’s father received from the Russian government an official letter stating that Roshchyna was being held in detention.
On October 10, Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War announced her death. It stated that she died during her transfer from Taganrog, to Moscow.
The Ukrainian intelligence service said they were working to secure Roshchyna’s release and that they had reached “preliminary agreement” on the issue.
