Andrii Polukhin said that the 24th Mechanized Brigade spokesperson, Andrii Polukhin in an interview on Free Radio, Oct. 22, that Russian troops had not been able to gain a foothold within the Ukrainian defense lines of the city of Chasiv Yar, Donetsk Oblast.

He said that Russian troops took advantage of the heavy fog to cross to Chasiv Yar which is now blocked.
According to Petrychak, the Russian army is outnumbered by the Ukrainian forces. It is constantly trying break through the Ukrainian defence line, bombarding Chasiv Yar using artillery and missiles and launching aircraft to conduct airstrikes.
Since the Ukrainian forces retreated from the eastern Kanal neighborhood of Donetsk Oblast in July, the Siverskyi Donets – Donbas Canal has become the new frontline.
After capturing Avdiivka, the Russian troops turned their attention to Chasiv Yar. This is a higher ground. The higher ground could provide Russian troops with a strategic advantage when attacking other towns in Donetsk oblast.
Chasiv Yar had a population of about 12,000 before the invasion. By April 2024, around 700 people remained.
In recent months, Russian forces have made a relentless advance in eastern Ukraine. They have gained territory while suffering heavy losses.
