After a corruption probe revealed that high-ranking officials were involved in the acquisition of fake disability certificates, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered the dissolution the Medical-Social Expertise Commissions of Ukraine.
The Security Service of Ukraine has revealed that Ukrainian law enforcement exposed the head of Mykolaiv Regional Medical-Social Expertise Commission as a corrupt schemer to avoid conscription.
Ukrainians may be exempted of military service if they have certain health conditions. This includes confirmed disabilities. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, has stated that many high-ranking officials bribed the Medical-Social Expertise Commission in order to obtain these documents.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports that on 22 October, Ukrainian leader announced the National Security and Defense Council’s meeting to discuss the situation regarding the commission and corruption schemes involving disability certifications. He reported “many violations” and said that many Ukrainian officials have disability certificates obtained illegally. He also detailed several decisions made by the National Security and Defense Council.
Zelenskyy approved dissolution of the commission for the following year.
In connection with recent investigation into the recent incident, the head of Mykolaiv Region Medical-Social expertise Commission whose name was not disclosed by law enforcement was found to be holding $450,000 cash, a collection hidden jewelry at various locations and a Russian Passport belonging to her son.
The majority of the money and valuables was found at her son’s house, who is an intern in medicine.
According to the Security Service the man also obtained Russian Citizenship at the former Russian Consulate in Odesa, before the full-scale conflict and owns three undeclared flats.
The investigation revealed that from 2015 to 2023, the chief of the commission declared only two million hryvnias in official income.
The Security Service added that the official will also receive disability documents in 2023 for themselves and their sons to collect additional state and social payments.
Ukraine is currently deciding if it will charge the official informally. The investigation is still ongoing.
