**New Military Unit to Protect Ukraine’s Cultural Heritage**
The Armed Forces of Ukraine have created a special unit to protect the country’s cultural heritage. This comes after Russian aggression has destroyed or damaged over 1,200 cultural sites in Ukraine.
According to the Ministry of Culture, Russia’s actions have harmed 124 national significance sites, 1,024 local significance sites, and 74 newly identified sites. The city of Kharkiv was particularly affected, with 322 monuments damaged.
The new military unit will consist of personnel with expertise in cultural heritage, archaeology, history, and museum management. Their main job is to coordinate efforts to protect and preserve these sites from destruction during military operations.
**Commitment to International Law**
The Ministry of Culture has stated that the creation of this unit reaffirms Ukraine’s commitment to international humanitarian law, including the Hague Convention for protecting cultural property in times of war. This move aligns with Article 7, Part 2 of the convention and represents its national-level implementation.
**UNESCO Recognition**
In related news, UNESCO has recognized a Ukrainian Easter egg tradition as a cultural heritage of humanity. This was announced during a recent meeting in Asunción, Paraguay.
