The Ukrainian government has overcome regulatory obstacles for 5G deployment while ensuring the security of military communications.
Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Federorov announced on 1 November that the Cabinet of Ministers had approved changes to radiofrequency regulations enabling 5G tests in three Ukrainian cities.
According to Fedorov during the pilot project Ukraine will verify the compatibility of the technology with military equipment.
In 2019, the fifth-generation (5G), cellular technology was rolled out globally. It promises more bandwidth, and faster data transmission speeds, than 4G.
According to the Minister, the pilot program will run for a period of two years, in two phases. During this time, the National Commission for State Regulation of Electronic Communications (NCSREC) and the Ukrainian State Center of Radio Frequencies (Ukraine State Center of Radio Frequencies) will verify that the 5G equipment doesn’t interfere with military networks.
Fedorov says that 5G is ten times faster at transmitting data than 4G. This creates new opportunities for high speed information exchange. The government plans to finish the nationwide rollout of 5G by 2030.
The regulatory changes provide operators with more flexibility, allowing them to use 2100 MHz for technologies such as 2G and 4G, not just 3G.
The discontinuation of 694-862MHz frequencies for analog television and digital will create bandwidth for mobile communications.
Fedorov stated, “We are working to ensure quality communication despite the full scale war.”
The G5 technology is a dense antenna deployment because of its 1.6-kilometer average range and limited penetration into certain building materials.
As of April 2019, 224 operators across 88 countries have begun 5G deployment.
