Defense Express experts urge Ukrainians to increase their protection in response to Russia’s use thermobaric warheads on its Shahed drones.
Ukraine should consider a safety measure to be taken during air attacks, especially in light of Russia’s use the Shahed 136 drones. Experts from Defense Express advise that, in addition to taking shelter behind two walls – which can help protect you against shrapnel – it is also advisable to close interior doors when unable to reach shelter.
In recent months, Russia intensified its drone strikes on Ukraine. It used various types of drones including Iranian-made Shaheds to strike critical infrastructures and urban areas. This strategy is designed to disrupt Ukraine’s electricity grid and create fear among civilians, resulting in deaths and damage in multiple regions.
Defense Express reports that this advice comes from experts at Defense Express due to Russia’s extensive usage of a thermobaric warhead, which creates an enormous fire cloud of temperatures between 2400-2600degC, which can fill a whole apartment when detonated.
Closing interior doors creates a “conditional separation” of rooms, reducing the spread and accumulation of the thermobaric mix throughout the home.
The thermobaric weapon is designated TB BCh-50. Media sources report that the warhead’s existence has been known in April 2024. However, Russia has only just begun using it against Ukrainian civilians.
According to the report the version used in Shahed’s drones is modern and single-stage. The older thermobaric munitions were two-staged, dispersing explosives and then detonating them. This creates an “evolving” fire cloud, which can cause hearing and lung damage and other injuries.
