Ukraine opens criminal proceedings over death of journalist in Russian captivity

According to the press office of the Prosecutor’s Office, the Security Service of Ukraine opened a criminal probe into the reported death of Viktoria Roschchyna while in Russian captivity.
Roshchyna disappeared on 3 August 2023 while traveling to the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine. She had traveled to Poland from Ukraine a month earlier and was supposed reach the occupied eastern Ukraine via Russia in three days.
UkrInform reported that in 2024, Russia will officially confirm for the first time its illegal possession of Roshchyna.
Yaroslav Yerchyshyn (head of the ‘s Committee on Freedom of Speech) said on 10 October that Viktoria’s father received notification of Viktoria’s death, which occurred on September, according to reports.
Previously, Ukraine investigated her disappearance. However, the case has been reclassified to murder.
“On 10th October, the media reported the death Viktoria Roschchyna, a Ukrainian journalist who had been illegally detained by the Russian Federation. The criminal case that was launched under Article 438 Part of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, (violation of laws and customs of warfare), has been reclassified to Article 438 Part on violation of laws and customs of a war and intentional killing,” Ukrainian prosecutors said.
The Main Investigation Department of Ukraine’s Security Service will conduct the investigation of the case prior to trial under the procedural guidance of ‘s Office.
Petro Yatsenko reported earlier that the for Prisoners of war was working to secure Viktoria’s release.
He also noted that her transfer from Taganrog, Russia to Moscow was part of the preparations made for her release.
