Ukraine Gets Help with Energy as Russia Attacks
The US has sent its first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Ukraine. This is a big deal for Europe, which wants to reduce its dependence on Russian energy.
Russia’s war in Ukraine started two years ago. Since then, Russia has made a lot of money from selling oil and gas to other countries. This money has been used to fund the war effort.
The US shipment arrived at a terminal in Greece last week. It was received by DTEK, Ukraine’s biggest private energy company. The delivery comes just as Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy systems have left over half a million people without power or heating.
Western countries have imposed sanctions on Russia to try and stop it from making money from oil and gas sales. However, some other big countries like China and India are still buying oil and gas from Russia.
The US shipment is significant because it shows that Ukraine can get energy directly from the US. Before this, Europe was getting a lot of its LNG from American suppliers. This new delivery is also important because it coincides with Russia’s plans to stop using Ukraine as a transit country for gas exports to Europe.
“The Russian influence over our energy system is being eroded,” said Maksym Tymchenko, CEO of DTEK. “This shipment provides a flexible and secure source of power.”
