The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War announced on Nov. 8 that Ukraine had repatriated the remains of 563 soldiers killed in combat against Russia. The Geneva Conventions stipulates that those who die during war have the right to a dignified funeral. According to Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinits, Ukraine had identified over 2,800 bodies or body fragments of fallen soldiers as of early March. The bodies of 320 soldiers came from Donetsk Oblast while 89 came from Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Another 154 bodies have been repatriated by Russian morgues. “Law enforcement officials will identify the dead,” the headquarters wrote on Telegram. The operation to recover fallen soldiers involved many government and military agencies including the Security Service of Ukraine, the Interior Ministry, State Emergency Service and the Armed Forces. The headquarters thanked the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for its assistance. In late February, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that approximately 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers were killed during the full scale invasion.
