Russian forces launched 56 drones, a missile and a missile towards Ukraine, aiming at Kyiv and Mykolaiv. Air defenses neutralized 22 drones, and destroyed 27 others.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces launched a massive attack on Ukraine over night on 16-17th October, deploying 56 strike-drones and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs), of unknown types, as well as a Kh59 guided air-to surface missile.
Russia continues to launch deliberate daily air strikes on residential areas, in an attempt to terrorize civilians. Every night, the Russian forces launch dozens – usually Iranian designed – Shahed 131 and 136 long-range “kamikaze drones. They also often launch several missiles.
The military reported that the occupants launched the missiles from Russia’s Kursk Oblast while drones were launched in Russia from Kursk, Oryol and PrimorskoAkhtarsk. The Ukrainian defense forces, which included aviation, air defense units, electronic warfare, and mobile firegroups of the Air Force and Defense Forces took part in repelling the assault.
According to the report Ukrainian air defenders shot down 22 drones in various regions including Sumy Kyiv Zhytomyr Mykolaiv Cherkasy Odesa Ternopil. Moreover, 27 strike drones or unidentified UAVs were lost due to “active electronic warfare countermeasures” while two UAVs flew toward Belarus.
According to the report, at least five drones may have reached their target in frontline oblasts.
In Mykolaiv Oblast energy infrastructure was targeted resulting in power failures. Vitaliy Kim of the Mykolaiv Oblast Military Administration stated that workers have restored power to many consumers but that work is still ongoing.
Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, reported that drone debris had been found on the premises of a kindergarten located in the Desnianskyi District, which broke a window. This incident did not result in any other injuries or damage. The Kyiv City Military Administration said that Russian drones approached Kyiv in waves, coming from different directions. Air raid alerts were sounded four times during the night.
The attack also caused damage to a multistory residential building located in the Desnianskyi District of Kyiv. Windows and interior finishes were damaged on three floors. This incident did not result in any injuries.
