The Russian Investigative Committee reported that the assailant pulled up alongside Klenkov’s car and fired several shots through the windows, causing Klenkov crash into a fence. He died on the spot. The shooter fled and a police hunt was launched.
No one has claimed responsibility and Ukrainian intelligence has not spoken out on the issue.
According to Vazhnye Istorii, Klenkov had been registered at the GRU Special Forces Training Center in Solnechnogorsk-2. This was about 20 minutes away from the murder scene. He was ordering food for GRU headquarters, and visiting a nearby.
It was also reported that he had a Hyundai Palisade. Evidence from the Investigative Committee indicates he died in a vehicle with the same .
