Mike Johnson, the speaker of the GOP House, demanded a month ago that Ukraine replace its ambassador in Washington following President Zelenskyy‘s visit to an ammunition plant in Pennsylvania.
Euromaidan Press has been informed by sources in the President’s Office that Ukraine plans to replace Oksana Marcarova as its ambassador to the United States to strengthen ties to Republican lawmakers. These sources claim that her successor will have demonstrated strong Republican connections, and experience in bringing GOP delegations into Ukraine.
The change in ambassadors is urgent following Donald Trump‘s election victory as US president, as Ukraine tries to maintain the best possible relationship with Republicans who will be in control of both the White House & Congress.
The source denied that Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s foreign minister, was on the list.
The move comes one month after a controversy erupted following President Zelenskyy’s visit to an ammunition factory in Pennsylvania. Republicans criticized his public thanks to “President Biden and Congress, as well as factory workers”. GOP leaders viewed this visit as possible election interference and launched an investigation in Congress. House Speaker Mike Johnson demanded Markarova’s dismissal from President Zelenskyy, claiming that she orchestrated the trip.
The controversy has left its mark, even though Markarova probably wasn’t the one who initiated the visit, as that would have required US Government approval.
Markarova is ambassador since 2021.
