**Ukraine Upgrades M113 Armored Personnel Carriers**
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has improved its M113 armored personnel carriers (APCs) by adding a new, remotely operated combat module. The upgrade was made possible with the help of US and Western partners.
**What is an M113 APC?**
The M113 is a fully tracked armored vehicle developed in the US from 1961 to 2007. It has simple anti-ballistic armor and machine gun weaponry, making it good for transporting infantry but not for assault operations.
**New Combat Module**
Ukrainian developers have installed the Tavria 14.5/7.62 module on its APCs. This new module allows a gunner to fire from within the armored vehicle using a monitor to observe the battlefield. It includes two machine guns (14.5 mm and 7.62 mm).
**Significant Improvement**
Defense Express analysts say this upgrade is significant because it provides better protection for the gunner, who previously had to operate from an exposed position with limited protection.
