Ukraine’s President Supports European Peacekeepers, But With Conditions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said that he supports the idea of having European peacekeepers in Ukraine. This includes French troops, as proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron. However, this must not stop Ukraine from joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) later on.
Zelenskyy made these comments during a TV interview on January 2nd. He stated that Ukraine needs more than just French soldiers to help keep peace in the country. Instead, he wants a bigger force involving multiple countries, ultimately leading to NATO membership.
The Ukrainian President also mentioned that other European countries might join this effort. He mentioned the UK and several other countries as possibilities, but only if they are willing to take on the role without fear of Russian backlash.
Zelenskyy recently met with US President-elect Donald Trump in Paris. While Trump seems supportive of the idea, Zelenskyy is waiting for more information about which specific countries will participate and whether the United States will be among them.
A recent poll in Germany shows that most people support the idea of deploying troops to help keep peace in Ukraine, but nothing has been done yet.
