**Slovakia Threatens to Cut Power Exports to Ukraine**
A disagreement over a Russian gas transit deal has led Slovakia to threaten cutting power exports to Ukraine. But Ukraine is not worried.
The deal, which expires in January 2025, was the main way that Russia sent gas to Europe through Ukraine’s territory. Ukraine decided not to extend it after it ended its own agreement with Russia in 2019.
Slovakia said it would stop sending electricity to Ukraine if it didn’t get an extension on the Russian deal. But Ukrainian officials say this is against EU rules and they have backup plans.
**Ukraine Has Alternative Power Sources**
Ukraine’s Energy Minister, German Galushchenko, said Slovakia wouldn’t really cut off power supplies because it would lose too much money. He also said Ukraine has other countries that can supply electricity if needed.
Poland and Romania are already offering to help Ukraine with extra power generation. This is important for Ukraine because Russia damaged its energy infrastructure in recent attacks.
**Ukraine Appeals to the EU**
Ukraine asked the European Commission for advice on how to deal with Slovakia’s threats. It remains firm in its decision not to extend the Russian gas transit agreement beyond January 2025.
