Ukraine Denies Plans for Nuclear Weapons
Ukraine‘s foreign ministry has said no to reports that the country might develop nuclear weapons. They emphasized their commitment to international agreements that stop countries from making or having nuclear arms.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs made this statement after a news report claimed that Ukraine could make a basic nuclear weapon in just a few months. The report said this could happen if the US stopped sending military aid. It suggested that Ukraine might use plutonium from old fuel rods at its nuclear power plants to make a device like the one used on Nagasaki in 1945.
Ukraine has agreed to follow rules against making or having nuclear weapons, as part of an international treaty called the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). This treaty was signed by many countries in 1968 and went into effect in 1970. After Ukraine left the Soviet Union in 1991, it inherited a large collection of nuclear arms. However, Ukraine chose to give up these weapons.
Ukraine remains committed to not making or having nuclear weapons, as stated by their foreign ministry.
