North Korean forces are now in Russia’s Kursk Region to join the war on Ukraine. Around 12,000 soldiers, among them high-ranking officers and military personnel, are currently undergoing training on Russian military ranges.
According to the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine (HUR), North Korean units have arrived to help Moscow counterattack Ukrainian forces in the area.
John Kirby, White House Spokesperson for National Security, had said a day earlier that between early and middle October 2024 at least 3,000 North Koreans soldiers were transported to Vladivostok from the Wonsan region of North Korea in Russia’s Far East. He said that it is unclear whether these soldiers will engage in combat against Ukraine with Russian forces after completing their three different training locations.
Ukrainian intelligence officials revealed that North Korean soldiers are being trained at five military bases located in eastern Russia: Baranovsky (Donguz), Yekaterinoslavsky (248th), and 249th (249th).
It is expected that the integration of North Korean soldiers who Russia intends to deploy to Ukraine in its war against them will take several weeks.
According to Ukraine, the number transferred North Korean soldiers currently stands at 12,000, which includes 500 officers and 3 generals from Pyongyang.
Moscow has appointed Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, the Russian Deputy Defence Minister to oversee the training of North Korean troops.
The soldiers sent to Pyongyang will be provided with bedding, winter clothing and footwear, as well as hygiene products.
According to established standards, each North Korean soldier will receive 500 grams of soap and 50 meters of toilet tissue per month.
North Korea is believed to have supplied Russia with a variety of missiles, including anti-tank, portable surface-to air, and short-range ballistic types, as well as over one million artillery rounds.
