Ukraine’s parliament passes a bill allowing foreigners as officers to International Legion

Yaroslav Zelezniak, a lawmaker from Ukraine, said on his Telegram channel that the parliament has adopted amendments to an existing law which would allow foreign volunteers to serve as officers in Ukraine’s International Legion.
Volunteers could only serve as privates and sergeants until now.
Oleksii Hocharenko, a lawmaker on Telegram, said that the main idea was to allow foreigners not only to be recruited as soldiers and sergeants, but also as officers.
The launch of the International Legion of Ukraine coincided with the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, in 2022. Foreigners volunteered to help defend Ukraine.
Ukraine’s reported that citizens from more than 50 countries, including veterans from the U.S.A., U.K.A, Australia, Europe and beyond, have joined the unit.
The unit was originally formed under the Territorial Defense Forces. It was later placed under the jurisdictions of the Armed Forces with some units being subordinate to the military Intelligence Agency (HUR).
Initially hailed as a PR triumph, it was soon marred by scandals and stories of misconduct.
The Kyiv Independent investigation from 2022 revealed that there was leadership misconduct both in the parts of the unit led by military intelligence as well as those overseen by Armed Forces.
Poland recently opened a program aimed at attracting Ukrainians who live in Poland to train with the Polish Forces. A low number of applicants delayed the formation of the Ukrainian Legion.

Zelensky will meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during his visit. The visit is part of an broader European tour that began on October 9 with a trip to Croatia.

The European Union has approved a plan that is unprecedented in the world. It involves a 35 billion ($37.2 billion), loan to Ukraine to help rebuild its war-torned economy. This loan will be secured by assets of Russia’s Central Bank, which are currently immobilized.
The Ukrainian General Staff stated that the destruction of the Shahed drones base would significantly reduce the ability for the Russian occupiers terrorize civilians living in Ukrainian cities and villages.
